Play-In Game #1: Rajon Rondo vs. Deron Williams

Williams or Rondo? Who would you want on your team?

So our first, not likely annual, Tournament of Greatness, or something like that, kicks off with a play-in game pitting two stellar point guards. The winner will get a chance to face off with one of the No. 1 seeds in the opening round of the tournament which opens up on Thursday, as if there wasn’t enough bracket-themed distractions on that day already.

The future is uncertain for both these guys. D-Will might not be in New Jersey long and it’s still a mystery whether or not Rondo will be in Boston any longer. It seems that Rondowill but who knows about Williams  unless the Nets can grab a marquee guy (ahem, Dwight Howard, ahem). Both are considered two of the best point guards in the game currently joining the ranks of Rose, Paul and Nash and both have excelled even with their teams struggling this season, the Nets much more so than the Celtics.

Deron Williams has literally been all there is to talk about on the court about the Nets. Maybe Kris Humphires dating life, moving to Brooklyn and possibly getting Dwight Howard are more flashy things to talk about but that isn’t playing basketball which Deron Williams has done really well this season.  Williams is averaging a career high in points (22.0 ppg) this season while also making the horrendous roster around him look good by dishing out 8.1 assists per game. D-Will’s signature game was the 57-point outing earlier this season which was against Charlotte, yeah that Charlotte, the 5-33 Charlotte. Still 57 points is a ton of buckets.

Rondo on the other hand provides more across the board. A constant triple-double threat his stat line (13.6 ppg, 10.0 apg, 5.0 rpg) may not look as flashy due to the fewer points but is stellar. Rondo is also a terrific defender and really right now seems to be on the cusp of his potential not the peak. Imagine if Rondo was playing along side guys that didn’t have paper mache ankles and subscriptions to AARP. Rondo hasn’t really had a team in which he can run, a system in which he would thrive. (Don’t tell Miami that though).  Rondo already has a few triple-doubles this season and is without a doubt the best player on the Celtics right now, except for that whole jump shot/foul shot thing.

Check in tomorrow for another play-in game!
